My daughter decided to go to Barcelona to work in a research group that she considered the best in the world in her field. I took it for granted that, as my friend — someone who had spent many days at my house — I could put her up for a few days until she found a suitable flat. I was surprised and angry by his refusal. He literally said to me: ‘The bullies and their accomplices won’t let us.’
I didn’t believe her. I couldn’t believe that something like that could happen at university.
Shortly afterwards, my daughter attended her first master’s class. It began with a round of public introductions, and when she said she had come to work with CREA, the professor replied, ‘Then I’m sure you’ll be living in a CREA flat.’ That harassing intrusion into my daughter’s individual freedoms made me realise that, unfortunately, Ramón was right. There was a new Inquisition, involving the worst teachers and the worst journalists, who proclaimed themselves guardians of my daughter without her consent or mine.
He then did his PhD at the Faculty of Education, which ranks first in international rankings. There, it was considered harassment to ask, without consent, what students did outside of academic hours or where they lived. It was common for teachers to invite students to their homes, often an entire class of 15 or 20 students. No journalist or teacher took it upon themselves to act as guardians of the ‘freedom’ of adult students who had not given their consent.
I am outraged that today there are journalists and teachers who are once again attacking my daughter’s freedoms: to be with whomever she wants, to do what she wants and where she wants. Those of you who talk about it are harassing her. Who gave you the right to grant yourselves the power to protect her freedom? Why do you think you are freer than she is?
I have gone through the names I know on a list and have not seen anyone who is part of a group that respects individual freedoms more than CREA. And I have seen a teacher who was reported, by name, by an intern.
Leave her alone once and for all.
No means no.
